The Padres declined the $14 million club option on Nick Pivetta for 2027. His four-year, $55 million contract originally gave him player options for 2027 ($14 million) and 2028 ($18 million), but 130 or more consecutive days on the injured list turned them into one team option. âš¾ NICK PIVETTA'S ELBOW INJURY
Pivetta left his April 12 start against the Rockies in the fourth inning and spent 147 days on the injured list with a right elbow flexor strain. He had a setback in his first rehab outing and returned on September 7. A similar flexor strain cost him a month with the Red Sox in 2024. A.J. Preller said Pivetta's finish to the season was "probably not perfect, honestly." Is the injury history the real reason the Padres passed on the option?

âš¾ PIVETTA'S 2026 NUMBERS BEFORE AND AFTER THE IL
Pivetta went 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings over eight regular-season starts, plus 7 2/3 innings in the postseason. His 4-seam fastball averaged 94.1 mph before the injured list and 93.6 mph after. Hitters made harder contact against him after his return in a small sample. Did his stuff hold up? With Michael King, Walker Buehler and Pivetta all free agents, MLB Trade Rumors lists Joe Musgrove, Randy Vasquez, JP Sears and Jhony Brito as the remaining starters with big-league experience.
