How trade values work
Every player gets a rating from 1 to 5 stars: where he ranks among players on an NHL roster (skaters and goalies rated separately). The stars map to five tiers.
- Franchise 4.5 to 5 stars Top 5% of the league. Teams build around these players.
- All-Star 4 stars Top 15%. A headline piece in any trade.
- Starter 3 to 3.5 stars Top half. An everyday player with real trade value.
- Rotation 2 to 2.5 stars A regular in a defined role. Usually a supporting piece.
- Depth 1 to 1.5 stars Bottom 15%: fringe roster, call-ups and replacement level.
What drives an NHL rating
- Production 30 to 55% Points and goals per game and per 60 minutes.
- Role 10 to 35% Ice time against his position, the coaches' own ranking. Goalies: save percentage, goals against and wins.
- Contract 15% This season's cap hit against what his play is worth.
- Upside and age 15% Age curve, with separate curves for skaters and goalies.
- Availability 5% Games played against the schedule.
Per-game rates and save percentage are regressed toward a depth player by sample size, so a short hot streak is not read as a season.
Ratings are recalculated every night, but a player changes rating only once his score clears the edge of his band by a margin, so one game does not move it.
