How trade values work
Every player gets a rating from 1 to 5 stars: where he ranks among players on a Major League contract (minor leaguers are rated on the same scale). The stars map to five tiers.
- Franchise 4.5 to 5 stars Top 5% of the league. Teams build around these players.
- All-Star 4 stars Top 15%. A headline piece in any trade.
- Starter 3 to 3.5 stars Top half. An everyday player with real trade value.
- Rotation 2 to 2.5 stars A regular in a defined role. Usually a supporting piece.
- Depth 1 to 1.5 stars Bottom 15%: fringe roster, call-ups and replacement level.
What drives an MLB rating
- Hitting or pitching 55 to 75% WAR as a full-season rate, plus OPS for hitters and ERA for pitchers.
- Fielding 20% for hitters Position difficulty and defensive WAR.
- Contract 20 to 25% Club control, or WAR against salary for players with a guaranteed deal.
- Prospect pedigree floor A ranked prospect's floor, worth at most what a 4-star big leaguer is.
The last four regular seasons pool by at-bats and innings, weighted toward the most recent and shrunk toward replacement level.
Ratings are recalculated every night, but a player changes rating only once his score clears the edge of his band by a margin, so one game does not move it.
