🚨 PADRES CATCHER DEBATE! Today, Andrew McFarland breaks down the San Diego Padres' catching logjam heading into the 2026 offseason. Ethan Salas debuted on Sept. 1 and hit .256/.275/.462 with 2 home runs in 40 plate appearances, while Freddy Fermin and Luis Campusano are both arbitration eligible. A.J. Preller said catching is "a good position to be in." No trade has been reported, and anything about a Fermin deal is speculation.

Padres Digest breaks down Ethan Salas, Freddy Fermin, Luis Campusano, A.J. Preller, and the questions the Padres face at catcher for 2027.

âš¾ ETHAN SALAS AND THE PADRES CATCHER LOGJAM
How did the Padres end up with three catchers and two spots? Salas arrived in September, Fermin was acquired from the Royals at the 2025 deadline for Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek, and Campusano is coming off a season with a .796 OPS. What does Preller mean by "a good position to be in"?

âš¾ FREDDY FERMIN'S GLOVE AND THE TRADE MARKET
Fermin posted 9 catching runs on Baseball Savant in 2026 while hitting .203/.274/.315. A report relayed by @YankeeReport_ cites Joel Sherman saying the Yankees are expected to keep Austin Wells and listing Fermin, Austin Hedges, and Luis Campusano among possible backup catcher fits. How does Fermin compare to Hedges season by season? Would a team pay real value for his defense?

âš¾ LUIS CAMPUSANO AT DH
Campusano hit .265/.363/.433 with 8 home runs in 248 plate appearances, and Craig Stammen has said he can DH. His catching runs sit at -3 on Savant. Can Campusano's bat carry a DH role with three catchers on the roster?

âš¾ THE INJURY WRINKLE
Fermin went on the injured list twice in 2026, once for a concussion and once for a head bruise. Campusano missed time with a toe injury, going on the 10-day IL on May 6 and returning July 3. Does the injury history make a third catcher more useful?
