Jesperi Kotkaniemi deserves a real opportunity, and Carolina’s growing injury list makes this the moment to give him one.

With Mark Jankowski sidelined by a lower-body injury, Kotkaniemi should take on the larger role available at center. He should also remain in the lineup when Jankowski, Jordan Staal, Taylor Hall and Seth Jarvis return. Healthy competition should reward what a player is doing now, and KK is giving Carolina reasons to keep playing him.

Through eight appearances, Kotkaniemi has two goals and two assists for four points, 12 hits and a plus-1 rating. He has scored in consecutive games, including Sunday’s loss in Calgary, where he recorded four shots and two hits. That is tangible production from a player fighting to establish a consistent role.

Four points in eight games is a half-point-per-game pace. It is a small sample, but it deserves encouragement through steady minutes and consistent linemates. Carolina should give him the chance to build on it.

Janko deserves credit for his outstanding start, he had scored in six consecutive games before missing Sunday’s contest. But his success does not eliminate KKs value. There is room to appreciate both while recognizing that KK offers a compelling combination of offensive ability and defensive usefulness through the middle.

The defensive case matters, too. The Hockey Writers’ recent analysis highlighted Kotkaniemi’s encouraging results at limiting expected goals against and argued that center is where Carolina can best use him. That strengthens the case for giving him meaningful responsibility while Staal is unavailable.

When everyone returns, I would keep Kotkaniemi at center in the bottom six and build the remaining forward combinations around performance. Staal’s return can reduce his defensive burden, while Hall and Jarvis give Carolina more options to surround him with skill. Getting healthier should help KK succeed.

He still needs to sustain this start. But consecutive games with a goal should earn another opportunity, and continued production should earn a permanent place.

Carolina needs to let Kotkaniemi build momentum. Give him Jankowski’s opportunity now, and every chance to keep his spot when the lineup is healthy.
