The Hurricanes Have Created a Monster....Its Depth
The Carolina Hurricanes are the very definition of the "next man up" philosophy and its all because of the system they have created.
4 games played | Record: 10-2-2 | 22 points....
The Carolina Hurricanes keep giving opponents the same problem: the lineup changes, but the pressure keeps coming.Take away a scorer, and somebody else finishes. Remove a center, and another player accepts the assignment. Shuffle the combinations, and the expectation stays the same.
Carolina improved to 10-2-2 through 14 games, collecting 22 points after Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Boston. That start becomes more impressive when you consider the missing pieces, Staal and Jarvis. Carolina faced Vancouver on October 20 without Seth Jarvis, Jordan Staal, Taylor Hall and Mark Jankowski.
Four missing forwards could force a team into survival mode. For Carolina, the challenge revealed how much danger exists throughout the roster. Rod Brind’Amour’s system has helped create a monster: a team whose identity survives the absence of the players most associated with it.
The wins have carried weight...
Carolina’s early success included convincing margins: 5-2 over Chicago and 4-1 over Philadelphia. Sustained pressure became scoreboard separation. The clearest example of the depleted lineup’s potential came in Vancouver. Nicolas Deslauriers, Nikolaj Ehlers and Logan Stankoven scored twice apiece in a 6-3 victory.
That is an uncomfortable outcome for an opponent preparing to exploit Carolina’s injuries. The scoring threat can emerge from a line that received little attention in the pregame discussion.
When different combinations can produce, opponents have fewer places to hide weaker defenders and fewer opportunities to concentrate their best coverage against one unit.
“Next man up” requires a structure....
The phrase is easy to repeat. Making it work requires players to understand what the next assignment demands.
Carolina’s approach gives that mentality a practical foundation. Pressure the puck together. Support the player pursuing it. Keep possessions alive. Recover quickly enough that an unsuccessful attack does not become an uncontested chance the other way.
Those responsibilities connect the lineup. A replacement does not have to reproduce an injured star’s entire skill set to contribute. He needs to execute his assignment well enough for the next player to execute his.
The adjustments have been tangible. Jordan Martinook moved into the middle, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored in consecutive games as Carolina navigated its depleted center group. That is where depth becomes more than a roster description. It becomes usable responsibility.
The goaltending makes the pressure sustainable...
A strong system still needs saves. Carolina has received them.
Pyotr Kochetkov improved to 8-0-0 against Boston, matching the franchise record for consecutive victories to begin a season. Hurricanes recap
Before that victory, his road-trip numbers already illustrated his importance: a 1.70 goals-against average and .916 save percentage through seven starts.
Reliable goaltending gives the skaters confidence to pursue their game. The players in front can attack knowing a breakdown does not automatically become a goal.
Carolina’s 4-0 win in St. Louis, accompanied by a 39-24 shot advantage, showed how commanding that combination can become.
Getting healthy raises the stakes....
The injuries have tested Carolina’s depth and given more players meaningful work. The potential payoff comes when established contributors return to a team that has learned it can win through several different combinations.
More trusted options give Brind’Amour more freedom. More credible scoring threats complicate defensive matchups. More players prepared for larger assignments make the next disruption easier to absorb.
The early results do not prove Carolina is invulnerable. They show why this team is becoming such a difficult opponent. The Hurricanes can lose important pieces and still impose their game. As those pieces return, they join a roster with more evidence of what it can accomplish together.
That is how a system creates a monster: everybody understands his part, and the threat keeps coming from somewhere new....
