Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery acknowledged Washington's offensive leap this season while flagging a glaring defensive problem: the team ranks 25th in expected goals against (3.42) at 5-on-5, per Sportlogiq. He noted much of the defensive breakdown actually starts in the offensive zone, citing Adrian Kempe's goal in the recent game against Los Angeles.
